The skies above Redcliffe came alive with colour today as giant kites, international flyers and families descended on the Moreton Bay foreshore for the first day of VietJet Redcliffe KiteFest marking the start of the September school holidays.
The free festival continues tomorrow, Sunday 20 September, from 10am to 4pm at Pelican Park, Clontarf, giving families another chance to see larger-than-life kites soaring above the bay and make a day of exploring one of South East Queensland’s most accessible coastal destinations.
Alongside the headline kite displays, visitors can enjoy the public kite flying zone, family entertainment, market stalls and food vendors, with paid rides, a petting zoo and kite-making workshops also available.
Tourism and Events Moreton Bay CEO Luke Edwards said KiteFest was a great way to start the school holidays and a perfect excuse for visitors to discover more of the region while they were there.
“Redcliffe KiteFest is a brilliant family event in its own right, but it also gives people a reason to come down, spend the day by the water and explore more of Redcliffe and Moreton Bay,” Edwards said.
“You can watch the giant kites at Pelican Park, grab fish and chips or fresh seafood by the bay, take a walk along the foreshore and settle in for an afternoon by the water.
“With the school holidays now underway, it’s also a great time to explore more of the region, whether that’s picking strawberries straight from the field or stepping back in time at the Abbey History Festival later in the break.”
Just a short drive from Brisbane, Redcliffe forms part of Moreton Bay’s coastal playground, with beaches, waterfront dining, markets, marine experiences and family attractions all within easy reach.
Edwards said the start of the September school holidays made this weekend particularly well suited to families looking for an easy day trip or short escape.
“You don’t need to travel far to have a proper short break,” he said.
“Moreton Bay is just up the road from Brisbane, and KiteFest is a great example of the kind of experience families can build an escape around.
“Come for the kites, stay for lunch by the water, explore the foreshore and discover a part of South East Queensland that is incredibly easy to get to.”
Visitors attending on Sunday are encouraged to make use of the free park and ride service, with parking available at Clontarf State High School via Isobel Street and a free shuttle operating continuously between the school and event site from 9.30am to 4pm.
VietJet Redcliffe KiteFest is delivered by Tourism and Events Moreton Bay with the support of VietJet, City of Moreton Bay and Tourism and Events Queensland.
